A District of Columbia National Guard armored vehicle collided with a civilian SUV on Capitol Hill early Wednesday, sending the civilian driver to hospital with minor injuries and briefly trapping the person inside the car, authorities said. DC Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo said crews responded at about 6 a.m. to the intersection of North Carolina Avenue and 8th Street SE, less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free the driver before an ambulance transported the individual with non-life-threatening injuries. No troops were hurt. The military truck involved was an M-ATV— a 14-ton mine-resistant vehicle assigned to the 273rd Military Police Company— that was conducting routine patrols when the crash occurred, the Guard said. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the cause, while the Guard has opened its own review. Roughly 1,900 National Guard soldiers are currently performing unarmed "presence patrols" across Washington as part of President Donald Trump’s stepped-up public-safety operation. City officials have urged caution after the incident underscored the challenges of operating heavy combat vehicles on urban streets.
