Apple is in early discussions with Alphabet’s Google about licensing the Gemini generative-AI system to power a redesigned version of Siri, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The move would shift a core element of Apple’s artificial-intelligence strategy to an external partner after years of relying mainly on in-house technology. Google has already begun training a custom version of Gemini that could run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, the report said. Apple is also testing rival large-language models from Anthropic and OpenAI while continuing to develop its own, with a decision expected within weeks as the company conducts an internal comparison of the approaches. The overhauled Siri is slated for release as soon as spring 2026 and is expected to underpin broader ‘Apple Intelligence’ features promised for future versions of iOS. Adopting an outside model would mark Apple’s most significant AI outsourcing to date and could accelerate the rollout of more conversational and context-aware capabilities across its devices. Shares of both Apple and Alphabet extended gains in afternoon New York trading following the Bloomberg report.
