Jeff Lynne has called off what had been billed as Electric Light Orchestra’s last concert, scheduled for 13 July at the BST Hyde Park festival in London, after doctors advised him that performing was impossible while he battles a systemic infection. The 77-year-old frontman said in a statement that the band’s legacy and its fans remain his priority, but that he must focus on treatment and rehabilitation. Promoters said ticket-holders will be offered refunds. The cancellation follows the scrapping of ELO’s penultimate date at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena on 10 July, which was also attributed to illness. Earlier in the month Lynne had revealed he was performing with a broken hand, and fans at recent shows expressed concern about his condition. The BST appearance was to close the group’s “Over and Out” farewell tour, marking the end of a career that began in Birmingham in 1970 and has yielded more than 50 million records sold worldwide. No rescheduled date has been announced.
