Separate traffic accidents on two Bay Area freeways left at least two people dead on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol. On Interstate 580, a head-on collision east of the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge toll plaza was reported at about 1:35 a.m. The crash shut all eastbound lanes and temporarily blocked bridge access until crews reopened the roadway shortly before 5 a.m. The CHP confirmed one fatality. Later in the morning, officers responded to an overturn collision on southbound Interstate 680 in Pleasant Hill. The agency said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Details on the cause of either crash remain under investigation.
