China’s major aviation hubs are forecasting a fresh jump in passenger traffic during this year’s summer peak, underscoring the continued recovery of domestic and regional travel. Beijing Daxing International Airport, the capital’s largest, expects to handle 9.52 million passengers between 1 July and 31 August, a 4.4% increase from 2024. The airport plans to operate about 60,400 flights over the two-month period, with daily volumes peaking on 5 August at more than 1,000 flights and 170,500 travellers, according to airport operator data. In Shanghai, the combined throughput of Pudong and Hongqiao airports is projected to reach 396,000 passengers a day during the same two-month window, up 7% from a year earlier. Roughly 150,000 flights are scheduled, reflecting resilient demand for both leisure and business travel in China’s largest commercial centre. Further south, the island province of Hainan—which positions itself as a duty-free tourism hub—expects its two primary airports, Haikou Meilan and Sanya Phoenix, to handle more than 8.3 million passenger journeys over the summer high season. The forecasts highlight widespread optimism among airport operators as airlines add capacity to popular domestic routes and short-haul international services in East and Southeast Asia.
