The 12th edition of The World Games commenced on August 7, 2025, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, marking the first time the event is hosted on the Chinese mainland. As the highest-level international multi-sport event outside the Olympic Games, it features 3,942 athletes from 112 countries and regions competing in 256 events across 34 sports. The opening ceremony, held at the Tianfu International Convention Center, was declared open by Chinese State Councillor Shen Yiqin and included cultural performances, a flying disc symbolizing global unity, and a main cauldron lit in the middle of water. The event attracted nearly 6,679 participants, including athletes and officials, with China sending its largest-ever delegation of 489 members, including 321 athletes. The Games also introduced dragon boat racing as an official competition event for the first time. On the second day, China won three gold medals and one silver, and on the third day, 48 gold medals were contested, with China leading the medal tally. Other notable events include the wakeboard freestyle qualifiers and a thrilling women's 4x100m surface finswimming relay won by China. The Games have also been praised for their cultural showcase of Chengdu's heritage and have attracted international athletes and tourists, supported by visa-free transit policies. Additionally, Hong Kong secured its fourth medal with a bronze in wakesurfing. The World Games continue to highlight non-Olympic sports and foster cultural exchange in Chengdu through August 17, 2025.
