Alphabet Inc.'s Google has reported a significant increase in the usage of its AI chatbot, Gemini, with 350 million monthly active users (MAUs) and 35 million daily active users (DAUs) as of March 2025. This data emerged during an ongoing antitrust lawsuit, highlighting the rapid growth of Gemini from just 9 million DAUs in October 2024. The surge in adoption is attributed to Google's integration of the AI chatbot into various platforms, including Samsung devices, Google Workspace, and Chrome, as well as the release of Gemini 2.0 and 2.5 models, which include the new Audio Overview feature. Despite this growth, Google's Gemini still trails behind competitors. According to Google's estimates shown in court, OpenAI's ChatGPT boasts 600 million MAUs and 160 million DAUs, while Meta AI is reported to have around 500 million MAUs. Google's deal with Samsung to pre-install Gemini on devices and share ad revenue has been a key factor in its expansion, though it faces challenges in the ongoing antitrust trial regarding remedies for its search dominance. Alphabet's first-quarter 2025 earnings revealed a robust performance across its business, with CEO Sundar Pichai noting that AI Overviews in Google Search now reach 1.5 billion users per month. This feature, which was widely rolled out last May, has contributed to the company's strong growth in search engagement and is being monetized at a rate comparable to traditional search. In addition to AI developments, Alphabet reported a 43% year-over-year increase in capital expenditures for the first quarter, reaching $17.2 billion. The company reaffirmed its plan to invest approximately $75 billion in capital expenditures for the full year of 2025, with a focus on supporting growth across Google Services, Cloud, and DeepMind. Other notable AI achievements include over 140 million downloads of the Gemma models, more than 2.5 million users of Alpha fold, and over 30% of code at Google now being generated by AI.
