Austin police are investigating two separate killings that occurred within about five hours on 1 July, pushing the city’s homicide count to 32 for the year. The first incident unfolded at roughly 5:15 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 400 block of East Wonsley Drive in North Austin. Detectives say 61-year-old Robert Saldana fatally stabbed his 72-year-old roommate, Ronald Mixon, after an earlier dispute. Officers arrested Saldana at a nearby bus stop, and he has been charged with first-degree murder and booked on a $900,000 bond. The case is classified as Austin’s 31st homicide of 2025. Around 10:15 p.m., officers responded to the 3000 block of South Lamar Boulevard, where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in a restaurant parking lot and died about 25 minutes later. Investigators are treating the death as the city’s 32nd homicide and have not yet identified a suspect or vehicle. Police said the two cases are unrelated and urged anyone with information to call the department’s homicide tip line at 512-974-8477 or submit tips anonymously through Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
