Three men were killed and as many as 14 other people were wounded when multiple gunmen opened fire inside the Taste of the City Lounge in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, New York City police said. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters that surveillance footage shows Jamel Childs, 35, and Marvin St. Louis, 19, arguing moments before St. Louis fired the first shots. Childs and two other men returned fire. Childs and St. Louis—both struck multiple times—died at hospital, while a bystander, 27-year-old Amadou Diallo, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators collected at least 42 shell casings from 9-millimeter and .45-caliber weapons and recovered a firearm nearby. Tisch said the violence appears to be gang-related, noting Childs’ listing in a police database as a member of the Folk Nation gang. Two of the four suspected shooters remain at large and no arrests had been made as of Monday. Mayor Eric Adams called the attack a reminder of the importance of removing illegal firearms, pointing out that it occurred during a year in which New York has recorded historically low levels of gun violence. Crisis-management teams have been deployed to support victims’ families and deter possible retaliation.
