A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody after opening fire near the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue in New York City’s Times Square shortly after 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to the New York Police Department. Police said the shooting followed a verbal dispute and that officers patrolling the area heard the gunshots, pursued the suspect for one block and recovered a handgun at the scene. Three people were wounded: a 19-year-old man shot in the foot, a 65-year-old man hit in the leg and an 18-year-old woman grazed in the neck while riding in a car. All were taken to Bellevue Hospital and listed in stable condition. Investigators believe the teenage gunman targeted the 19-year-old, while the older man and the woman were bystanders. The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, faces charges that include attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and illegal weapons possession. Times Square has been classified as a "sensitive location" where firearms are banned under New York State law. The incident comes as New York City reports a 23 percent decline in shootings this year through early August, marking the fewest gun-violence episodes in decades. Authorities said the investigation into Saturday’s attack is continuing and appealed for additional witnesses and video footage.
