A 42-year-old man was tackled and beaten by a group of New York City subway riders after he allegedly grabbed and restrained a 20-year-old woman on the Manhattan-bound J-line platform at Norwood Avenue in Brooklyn on Sunday morning, according to police and video posted online. The woman screamed for help as the man, identified by police as Fredrick Marshall of Queens, held her from behind and shoved her forward. Several bystanders intervened, tripping Marshall to the ground and striking him until the victim was able to escape with minor injuries to her stomach, arms and shoulder. Officers responding to the scene arrested Marshall and recovered a knife and a blackjack from his possession. He was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree harassment and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Court records show Marshall, who has no prior arrests in the city, was granted supervised release because the charges are not eligible for bail under New York law. The confrontation, captured in a TikTok video that has drawn millions of views, is the latest high-profile instance of subway riders taking matters into their own hands amid heightened concerns about transit safety. Police said their investigation is ongoing.
