There are major problems with health & the US healthcare system that need attention. But that RFK Jr is Secretary of HHS, overseeing M&M, NIH, CDC and FDA is a profound national embarrassment and threat to the nations health. Truly unbelievable. https://t.co/VRxYJucGCY
A 30-year-old Georgia man, identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as Patrick Joseph White, opened fire on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Atlanta campus late Friday from a CVS pharmacy across the street. Armed with five guns, White riddled at least four CDC buildings with roughly 40 bullets before fatally shooting DeKalb County police officer David Rose, 33, who had responded to the scene. White was later found dead on the pharmacy’s second floor; investigators have not confirmed whether he was killed by police gunfire or took his own life. In an internal video call reviewed by STAT and CNN, CDC leaders told some 800 employees the assault was a “targeted attack” linked to the gunman’s fixation on Covid-19 vaccines. Staff members, many sheltering in place during the incident, pressed officials about the role of online disinformation and about coordination with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Director Dr. Susan Monarez said the agency is conducting a comprehensive security assessment and will keep employees working remotely while additional armed teams patrol the campus. Officer Rose’s death and the near miss for hundreds of staff have intensified concerns about hostility toward public-health workers. Former U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams called the shooting a “wake-up call” to stop rhetoric that “dehumanizes those trying to keep us safe.” Kennedy, who has long questioned vaccine safety, issued a statement saying he was “deeply saddened” and pledged support for CDC personnel, but critics inside and outside the agency said he must do more to combat misinformation. The CDC, already grappling with budget cuts and attrition, is offering expanded mental-health services and “liberal” administrative leave. Federal and local investigators say White acted alone but are reviewing past threats against the agency as they piece together the chain of events that turned the public-health campus into the latest site of a high-profile U.S. shooting.
