Montgomery County investigators say a 35-year-old man fatally attacked his stepfather with a machete and then died in a head-on collision he appears to have caused minutes later on the same rural road in Magnolia, Texas. The sheriff’s office received a report at 8:52 a.m. Thursday of an SUV that crossed the center line on FM 149 near Millhouse Road and struck a dump truck. Two minutes later deputies were called to a nearby house about 100 yards away, where they found 77-year-old Jeffrey Love dead from multiple sharp-force injuries. A machete was recovered at the scene. Dash-camera video reviewed by detectives shows the driver, identified as Nicholas Petropolis, accelerating before veering into the oncoming truck. Petropolis was pronounced dead at the crash site; the truck driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities believe the incidents are connected and are treating the case as a murder-suicide. Investigators said there were no previous domestic-violence calls to the residence and are working to determine a motive.
