San Jose police fatally shot 48-year-old Mateusz Dzierbun at Cataldi Park on Sunday after the Fremont resident allegedly stabbed his nine-year-old son to death and then advanced on officers with a large kitchen knife, according to Police Chief Paul Joseph. Responding to a 3:23 p.m. 911 call that falsely described an unknown attacker, officers arrived to find Dzierbun standing over the boy, covered in blood. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon so medics could aid the child, Dzierbun allegedly charged the officers, who opened fire. He was pronounced dead at hospital; the child died at the scene. No officers were injured. Joseph said the suspect’s call appeared to be a pre-planned attempt at “suicide by cop,” adding that investigators have found no prior criminal, mental-health or domestic-violence history linked to Dzierbun. The killing marks San Jose’s second fatal officer-involved shooting in a week. Separate homicide and internal investigations are under way, and body-camera footage is expected to be released under state transparency rules.
