A pickup truck that failed to stop at an intersection in Gilford Township, about 100 miles north of Detroit, collided with a full-size van carrying members of a local Amish community, the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office said. Six people—five Amish passengers in the van and one person in the truck—were killed, and seven others were taken to area hospitals. The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, with multiple occupants from both vehicles ejected on impact. Thirteen people were involved in the two-vehicle collision, including 10 riding in the van driven by a hired, non-Amish driver. Authorities described the incident as preventable and urged motorists to slow down and obey traffic signs, noting that distracted or impatient driving poses particular risks in rural areas where horse-and-buggy travel is common. State police said a separate crash the same day in western Michigan killed a four-month-old girl when a pickup struck an Amish buggy, underscoring what officials called a need for greater caution when sharing roadways with the Amish community.
