The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved murder charges against police officer Klinzy Masinde Barasa for the fatal shooting of 22-year-old mask vendor Boniface Kariuki Mwangi in Nairobi on June 17, 2025. Barasa was arraigned before Milimani High Court and pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. His colleague, Duncan Kiprono, who was also initially implicated, has been released without charges due to lack of evidence. Kariuki succumbed to injuries sustained from the shooting. Barasa has been declared fit to stand trial, and a bail application hearing is scheduled for August 19, 2025. The case is being presided over by High Court Judge Margaret Muigai.
