EC Pres. von der Leyen and Canada's PM Carney talked about defense procurement and manufacturing.
During the 2025 NATO Summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in multiple high-level meetings with leaders from allied countries to enhance economic cooperation, security ties, and defense collaboration. Carney met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to discuss strengthening defense across the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Discussions with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof focused on bolstering economic cooperation and trans-Atlantic security. Carney also met with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, emphasizing support for Ukraine and cooperation between Canada and Estonia. Additionally, Carney held talks with leaders of several Nordic countries on deepening economic and Arctic security, infrastructure investment, and defense as NATO allies. At the summit, he met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to explore collaboration between NATO and Indo-Pacific partners on defense matters. Carney also participated in discussions with the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s principal decision-making body, addressing key alliance decisions. Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Denmark’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen and Faroe Islands Minister Sirið Simona Stenberg to discuss Ukraine’s military needs, air defense strengthening, and countering Russian aggression. On July 14, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a phone conversation focusing on defense procurement and manufacturing cooperation. The dialogue between the EU and Canada reflects efforts to strengthen political and economic ties amid pressures from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies.
