Paris Saint-Germain lifted their first UEFA Super Cup after overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in Udine. Tottenham struck through Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and newly appointed captain Cristian Romero three minutes into the second half, but Kang-in Lee halved the deficit on 85 minutes and Gonçalo Ramos levelled in the third minute of stoppage time. In the shootout Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven, allowing PSG to prevail despite missing their opening kick. The match was Chevalier’s competitive debut for PSG, four days after the 23-year-old France international joined from Lille. He started because coach Luis Enrique left long-time No. 1 Gianluigi Donnarumma out of the squad for what he called stylistic reasons. Hours before kick-off, the 26-year-old Italian issued a statement saying “someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group,” confirming his intention to leave with one year remaining on his contract. PSG continued reshaping their squad by completing the €63 million signing of Ukrainian centre-back Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth, with a further €3 million in potential add-ons, on a deal running to 2030. Tottenham, meanwhile, signalled a new era under manager Thomas Frank by handing the armband to Romero earlier in the day.
