Kimberly Guilfoyle, President Donald Trump’s nominee to become U.S. ambassador to Greece, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 9 July. The former Fox News host and campaign adviser said representing Washington in the “birthplace of democracy” would be a “uniquely humbling honor.” Guilfoyle told senators her top priorities would be accelerating Greece’s defence modernisation and deepening bilateral energy cooperation. She highlighted Athens’ plans to keep defence spending near 3 % of GDP—with the aim of reaching 5 %—and cited recent and planned purchases of U.S. equipment such as F-35 fighters, Apache helicopters and naval vessels. On energy, she pointed to U.S. LNG shipments through the Revithoussa terminal, the Alexandroupoli floating storage regasification unit and proposed cross-border power links that could turn Greece into a regional hub. Casting Greece as a “pillar of stability” and a “staunch NATO ally,” Guilfoyle pledged to protect the interests of Greece, Cyprus and Israel, and said she would champion religious freedom. She drew a sharp contrast with neighbouring Türkiye, which remains barred from the F-35 programme after acquiring Russia’s S-400 missile system. Committee chair Jim Risch reiterated his opposition to any resumption of F-35 sales to Ankara and pressed the nominee on how she would handle tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Guilfoyle said Turkey’s exclusion was the consequence of its own choices and promised to coordinate closely with the U.S. envoy in Ankara. The committee is expected to vote on the nomination before sending it to the full Senate. If confirmed, Guilfoyle would succeed George Tsunis in Athens, with diplomatic sources projecting her arrival later this summer.
