Philadelphia Flyers prospect Porter Martone said his objective is to earn a spot on the NHL roster out of training camp this fall. The 18-year-old forward added that if the club deems the move unlikely, he will weigh the collegiate route with his agent. Flyers development coach Riley Armstrong praised Martone’s confidence and compared his attitude to that of Tyson Foerster when the latter played for AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley. Fellow Flyers hopeful Alex Bump echoed the ambition, telling reporters he will “absolutely” push general manager Danny Briere to include him on the opening-night roster. Armstrong said Bump’s shot gives him “a great chance” to graduate from the minors if he maintains his form through camp. Across the Hudson, New York Rangers first-round pick Gabe Perreault closed development camp with a similar vow, saying every prospect should enter camp expecting to make the team. The winger is training in Chicago alongside veterans Patrick Kane and J.T. Compher as he prepares for September.
#NYR development camp ended today. Gabe Perreault was asked what he thinks of his chances to make the big team out of training camp. "I'm gonna go with the mentality that I'm gonna make the team. I think coming into camp, that's what everyone's mentality should be.''
Porter Martone affirms that his goal is to make the Flyers out of camp this season & play the full season here. He said if the Flyers make it clear that's unlikely, he'll circle up with his agent & discuss the college route possibility. But his plan now is to push for the NHL.
