Apple Inc. has increased iPhone manufacturing at five plants in India, including facilities run by Tata Group and Foxconn Technology, according to a CNBC report that cites people familiar with the matter. The ramp-up comes ahead of the expected launch of the iPhone 17 line and follows the companyās broader strategy of diversifying production away from China. The move coincides with rising tension between Washington and New Delhi over Indiaās purchases of discounted Russian oil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that India is āprofiteeringā from the Ukraine war and said the White House is prepared to impose additional āsecondary tariffsā of roughly 100% on countries trading with Russia if no peace deal is reached by September. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump lifted existing duties on Indian goods to 50%. Despite the diplomatic friction, Appleās India output has expanded rapidly. Research firm Canalys estimates shipments of India-made iPhones to the United States jumped 76% in May as trade restrictions on Chinese goods tightened. Apple has also pledged to invest more than $600 billion in U.S. manufacturing over the next four years, including a $2.5 billion expansion at glass supplier Corning announced this month.
