India marked Hul Diwas on 30 June, the anniversary of the 1855 Santhal uprising against the British East India Company. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, saluting tribal icons Sidhu Murmu, Kanhu Murmu, Chand–Bhairav and Phulo–Jhano for what the president called their “indomitable courage” in resisting injustice. Ceremonies and cultural events were held in Jharkhand, West Bengal and other states with large Santhal populations. Celebrations turned tense at Bhognadih, the Jharkhand village where the rebellion began, when villagers locked the gate of a memorial park during an official programme. Police responded with a lathi charge and fired tear-gas shells, leading to a clash that left several people injured, according to local media reports. The situation was later brought under control, but the incident forced organisers to curtail the event. Political leaders traded blame after the violence. State BJP president and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi said the confrontation stemmed from the ruling coalition’s “obstinate” handling of the function, while Congress state chief Keshav Mahto Kamlesh stated that the government is examining the circumstances closely. Chief Minister Hemant Soren earlier noted that Hul Diwas was being observed across India as a symbol of tribal pride and resistance.
