Bharatiya Janata Party law-maker Kangana Ranaut toured several flood-hit villages in Thunag, Nachan and other parts of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on 6–7 July after a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides that cut road links and swept away homes. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, the disaster has so far left 14 people dead, 31 missing and damaged more than 150 houses as well as 14 bridges. Ranaut inspected relief camps with Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur and said she would brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister’s Office on the extent of losses. Speaking to reporters, the first-term MP said she “doesn’t have any official cabinet or dedicated disaster-relief fund,” adding that an MP’s role is to liaise between New Delhi and the state government for financial assistance. She also called for climate-impact surveys in the hill state and said she had already sanctioned projects under her constituency fund while remaining “with the people in every situation.” The remarks drew sharp criticism from the opposition Congress, whose spokesman Pawan Khera described them as insensitive. Ranaut countered that her comments had been misinterpreted and accused critics of diverting attention from what she called state-level governance failures. Relief operations in the affected areas continued on Monday amid disrupted power and water supplies across some 200 roads and 278 supply schemes.
