An under-trial inmate at Delhi’s Tihar Jail was found dead late on 13 July after apparently hanging himself from a window in the prison hospital, officials said on Tuesday. The prisoner, identified as 35-year-old Ramesh Karmakar, was declared dead at the scene. Karmakar had been arrested on 22 April for allegedly murdering a woman with whom he was in an extramarital relationship. He was lodged in Jail Number 4 but was transferred to the hospital in Jail Number 3 on 28 May for treatment of dizziness, ear pain and reduced hearing, according to jail authorities. Prison officials have launched an inquiry and informed the local magistrate, as required under jail rules. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at a Delhi government hospital to confirm the cause of death.
