India's Union Cabinet has approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects with a combined investment of approximately ₹4,594 crore (around ₹4,600 crore) across the states of Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. These projects, part of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), will expand the country's semiconductor ecosystem and contribute to its goal of becoming a global hub for chip production. Two of the plants in Odisha are being developed by SicSem Private Ltd and 3D Glass Solutions Inc. Construction work for all four plants is expected to commence soon. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other officials highlighted the government's commitment to advancing semiconductor manufacturing as a key component of the Make in India initiative. The approval brings the total number of semiconductor projects under the ISM to ten. The developments coincide with a broader surge in India's electronics manufacturing sector, which has seen exports rise 47% in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, reaching $12.4 billion, and production growth from $31 billion to $133 billion over the past decade. Additionally, Cyient has launched a $100 million semiconductor division focused on designing power-efficient ASICs for sectors including automotive, data centers, medical, aerospace, and defense. Major companies such as Samsung and Tata are also expanding their semiconductor manufacturing footprint in India, with Tata building the country's first commercial-scale silicon fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strategic importance of these projects in strengthening India's digital future and global innovation capabilities.
