A prisoner on medical parole, identified by police as Chandan Mishra, was shot multiple times inside Room 209 of Paras Hospital in Patna early on 17 July. Mishra, a resident of Buxar district with several murder cases against him, had been transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail before being released temporarily for treatment. Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K Sharma and Central Range Inspector General Jitendra Rana said unidentified gunmen believed to belong to a rival gang entered the private hospital and opened fire. Mishra was initially treated for critical injuries but succumbed later in the morning, according to local media reports. The attackers escaped, and a forensic examination of the scene is under way. Police have formed special teams to trace the shooters and are reviewing hospital CCTV footage. Officers said an internal inquiry will examine how armed assailants accessed a guarded patient inside a reputed medical facility. The incident has reignited debate over law and order in Bihar. Opposition politicians, including RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari, Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Independent MP Pappu Yadav, accused the state government of failing to curb gang violence and demanded stronger security for hospitals and custodial patients.
