President Donald Trump said Friday he is nominating Sergio Gor, director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and a longtime campaign aide, to serve as U.S. ambassador to India and as special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. Gor will continue overseeing federal staffing at the White House until he secures Senate confirmation. Trump’s post on Truth Social praised the 38-year-old operative for helping fill roughly 4,000 government positions during the administration’s second term and for acting as a key fundraiser and publisher for the president’s political movement. Gor called the nomination “the honor of my life.” The appointment comes as Washington’s relationship with New Delhi is under strain. The United States plans to double import tariffs on Indian goods to 50% on Aug. 27, citing India’s surging purchases of Russian oil. Trade talks have stalled, and a visit by U.S. negotiators scheduled for next week was abruptly canceled. With annual bilateral commerce exceeding $190 billion, Gor would be tasked with managing a critical but increasingly contentious partnership once confirmed.
