On August 28, 2025, thousands of workers from various sectors staged a demonstration in front of the Indonesian Parliament building (DPR RI) in Jakarta, demanding 10 key issues. The protest escalated into clashes with police, who used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. The unrest caused major traffic disruptions, including the closure of two toll roads in the Senayan area. During the chaos, a tactical vehicle (rantis) operated by the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) ran over and killed Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi (ojek online) driver, who was known as the breadwinner for his family. Seven Brimob officers were detained in connection with the incident, and the police's internal affairs division (Propam) was ordered to investigate. Police and government officials, including National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, former Governor Anies Baswedan, and President Prabowo Subianto, expressed condolences and promised accountability and support for Affan's family. The incident has sparked further protests, including planned demonstrations by university student organizations at Polda Metro Jaya. The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has also dispatched a team to investigate the violence. Public transportation routes, such as Transjakarta bus services, were disrupted due to ongoing demonstrations near the Brimob headquarters in Kwitang, Jakarta. The authorities have urged calm and peaceful resolution amid the heightened tensions following the fatal incident.
