Britain, the United States, France and 11 other governments issued a joint statement on 31 July condemning what they described as a sharp rise in assassination, kidnapping and harassment operations orchestrated by Iranian intelligence services in Europe and North America. The signatories—Albania, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States—said the activities violate their sovereignty and demanded Tehran halt the campaigns immediately. The governments warned that Iranian operatives are increasingly working with international criminal networks to target journalists, dissidents, Jewish citizens, and current and former officials. “We are united in our opposition to the attempts of Iranian intelligence services to kill, kidnap and harass people in Europe and North America,” the statement said, pledging closer coordination to thwart future plots. British authorities said they have disrupted more than 20 Iran-linked schemes to abduct or kill individuals in the United Kingdom since early 2022, while Dutch and U.S. investigators have separately tied Tehran to attempted assassinations in their jurisdictions. Western security agencies have cited the thwarted 2024 plot against an Iranian exile in the Netherlands and earlier U.S. indictments of European gang members allegedly hired to murder an Iranian-American journalist as evidence of the trend. The fresh warning against Iran follows a separate 18 July declaration by NATO members that condemned Russia’s “malicious” cyber and hybrid attacks, underscoring widening concern among Western allies over state-sponsored threats to their security.
