Israeli lawmaker Hamad Amar, a Druze member of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, crossed the border from Israel into Syria on 16 July to persuade Israeli Druze youths who had entered the neighboring country to return home. Channel 12 broadcast footage of the crossing, which Amar said was coordinated with Israeli security forces and undertaken “out of responsibility” for the community. Israeli police officers are also inside Syria encouraging the youths—reported in local media as numbering in the hundreds—to leave. The young Druze had reportedly travelled across the frontier to protect fellow Druze on the Syrian side amid rising regional tensions. Amar remains on Syrian soil while talks continue.
This story has taken a bizarre twist: Israeli Druze member of Knesset @hamad_amar11 also entered Syria. He’s still there, trying to get Israeli Druze who went to protect Syrian Druze to come home. https://t.co/kaJHJbRy0a
