Israel carried out airstrikes on Wednesday against targets in Damascus and the southern province of Suwayda, hitting the Syrian Defence Ministry, areas near the presidential palace and other government and civilian facilities. The attacks killed at least three people and wounded 34, according to Syrian officials, and caused damage to infrastructure. Syria’s Foreign Ministry denounced the raids as a “treacherous Israeli aggression” and said they form part of a systematic policy aimed at fuelling tension and chaos. Damascus said it holds Israel fully responsible for the escalation and asserted its “legitimate right” to defend its territory by all means permitted under international law. In a formal letter to the United Nations, Syria requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council to address what it called repeated Israeli violations of its sovereignty. Diplomats said the session, backed by Algeria, is scheduled for Thursday in New York. Syrian representatives are expected to press for international action to deter further strikes.
