Tesla plans to double its retail footprint in Japan to around 50 stores by the end of 2026, up from 23 today, Nikkei reported. The U.S. electric-vehicle maker will first raise the total to 30 outlets this year as it pivots from largely online sales to bricks-and-mortar locations in shopping and business centers. The company also intends to lift its fast-charging network beyond the roughly 130 stations it currently operates and will begin offering an adapter so its cars can use Japan’s CHAdeMO standard. Tesla is studying a longer-term expansion to 100 domestic stores, according to the report. The retail push follows a 70% year-on-year jump in Tesla’s Japanese deliveries to about 4,600 vehicles in the first half of 2025, even as global sales soften. Chinese rival BYD plans to expand its own dealership network in Japan to 100 locations next year, intensifying competition in a market where battery-electric vehicles remain a small share of overall auto sales.
