Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, has issued a firm directive for all civil servants to report to work on Monday, July 7, 2025, despite the planned Saba Saba protests. Ruku emphasized that the day is not a public holiday and warned that absenteeism would not be tolerated, with disciplinary actions including show cause letters for non-compliance. Following this, Ruku conducted an unannounced inspection at government offices in Nyeri County on July 15, 2025, where he found widespread lateness and absenteeism among public officers. He declared that latecomers and absentees would henceforth be treated as ghost workers, a status that could lead to removal from the government payroll. Ruku underscored the importance of punctuality and responsibility among public servants, stating that those who cannot keep time have no place in the public service. He also highlighted the government's investment in the public sector and stressed the need for civil servants to deliver efficient services to foster a conducive environment for business and ensure accountability for public funds. The Cabinet Secretary affirmed the government's commitment to public service reform and warned that failure to comply with work obligations could result in dismissal.
We are serious about public service reform, and we will take all necessary action-up to and including dismissal, to ensure Kenyans receive the service they deserve. Let us do what we are employed to do." Geoffrey Ruku, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital https://t.co/tTIsvYVqoR
