Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, has suspended 40 health facilities from the Social Health Authority (SHA) system over alleged fraud involving inflated claims and falsification of digital records. Among the suspended facilities are St. Johns Hospital in Nairobi, Nissi Medical Centre in Kisumu, and Toric Nursing Home in Homa Bay. Additionally, licenses of 12 doctors have been revoked, with their names forwarded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). These facilities will no longer receive SHA benefits and will be surcharged for losses incurred. Meanwhile, the SHA faces criticism for failing to settle 8.14 billion Kenyan shillings in unpaid insurance claims to families of public servants who died or were injured on duty. This debt crisis has led private hospitals to cut off civil servants from SHA services, requiring cash payments instead. Nairobi Hospital has halted planned price increases following talks with insurers such as Old Mutual, CIC, Britam Health, and AAR. The hospital is also contesting insolvency proceedings initiated over a disputed 51 million shilling debt, with the High Court declining to certify the case as urgent and directing parties to file responses within 14 days. The Kenya Hospital Association has accused Nairobi Hospital management of governance failures affecting its operations. Separately, healthcare workers at Machakos Level 5 and Kangundo Level 5 hospitals have been on strike for five days due to delayed salary payments and non-remittance of statutory deductions, severely disrupting medical services and leaving wards empty.
