Kenyan President William Ruto has intensified his administration's anti-corruption efforts by establishing a multi-agency team on the war against corruption (MAT), comprising 10 agencies including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), National Intelligence Service (NIS), Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The team aims to target corruption, economic crimes, and related offenses. This move follows Ruto's public accusations that some members of Parliament (MPs) and senators have been involved in extortion and bribery, with claims of bribes reaching up to KSh 150 million. The EACC has launched investigations into these allegations, focusing on identifying specific MPs involved, and has revealed ongoing probes into five sitting governors, 11 former governors, and 12 MPs, with recommendations to prosecute several governors including Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu), Mohammed Ali (Marsabit), Hillary Barchok (Bomet), and others. The EACC is also pursuing cases worth over KSh 1.6 billion involving 822 county officials. However, the multi-agency team formed by President Ruto has faced legal challenges; four activists filed a petition claiming the team's creation is unconstitutional and usurps the functions of the EACC. Consequently, the High Court suspended the operations of the anti-graft team pending the hearing and determination of the case. Meanwhile, MPs have pushed back against Ruto's corruption claims, demanding that he appear before Parliament to provide evidence. They have threatened to impeach the speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi, for not summoning the President. Church leaders and civil society have called for concrete actions against corruption rather than rhetoric, urging the arrest and prosecution of implicated legislators. The controversy continues to fuel tensions between the Executive and Legislature amid ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.
