Kenyan President William Ruto has issued an executive proclamation designating 27 August as Katiba Day, to be observed annually in honour of the promulgation of the country’s 2010 Constitution. The announcement comes two days before the 15th anniversary of the charter’s adoption. According to the proclamation, Katiba Day will remain a working day but will be marked by all branches and levels of government, including schools and Kenya’s diplomatic missions. Public institutions are instructed to organise events that promote constitutional awareness and civic engagement. Ruto said the 2010 Constitution represented a turning point in Kenya’s democratic journey, introducing citizen-centred governance, devolution and stronger protections for fundamental rights. The new holiday, he added, is intended to remind Kenyans of their collective duty to obey, preserve, protect and implement the charter.
