An American Airlines Airbus A321 operating Flight 1665 from Las Vegas to Charlotte returned to Harry Reid International Airport minutes after take-off on Wednesday when smoke and sparks were seen coming from its left engine. Flight-tracking data show the jet departed at about 8:11 a.m. local time and landed roughly nine minutes later. No injuries were reported among the 153 passengers and six crew members on board. American Airlines said the sharp turnaround was prompted by a “mechanical issue” and initial inspections found no evidence the engine caught fire. The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power, passengers deplaned normally, and the plane has been taken out of service for further examination by maintenance personnel. The Federal Aviation Administration classified the event as an engine issue and has opened an investigation. Airport operations were not disrupted, and American Airlines is arranging alternate travel for the affected passengers.
