American Airlines Flight 1665, an Airbus A321 bound for Charlotte, returned to Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport minutes after take-off on 25 June when smoke and brief bursts of flame were seen coming from its left engine. The aircraft departed at about 8:11 a.m. local time and landed safely at roughly 8:20 a.m. American Airlines said all 153 passengers and six crew members deplaned normally after the jet taxied to the gate under its own power. Airport officials reported no injuries, and airport fire crews inspected the engine on arrival. The carrier removed the aircraft from service for maintenance evaluation, and the Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into the reported engine issue.
