Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the Russian-flagged tanker Vilamoura was damaged by an explosion in its engine room while transiting the Mediterranean Sea on 27 June. The blast occurred as the vessel, described by Kyiv as part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” sailed roughly 150 kilometres northeast of Libya’s Az-Zuwaytina oil terminal. The agency did not disclose the cause of the explosion or whether the tanker was carrying cargo at the time.
