The Sección Instructora of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies has begun reviewing a new request for the removal of immunity (desafuero) against Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and senator. This follows the dismissal of a previous desafuero petition filed in 2022 by the Campeche state prosecutor's office, which was unanimously rejected by the Sección Instructora. Moreno has denounced the current Morena-led government for what he calls a "brutal political persecution" using prosecutors to intimidate opposition figures. He has also threatened to report President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and other Morena officials to U.S. authorities such as the FBI and DEA. In response, Morena's presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Moreno, labeling him a "vendepatrias" (traitor) following his threats. Legislator Ricardo Monreal has supported Sheinbaum's criticisms and urged the Sección Instructora to analyze the new desafuero request submitted by Campeche's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. Moreno maintains that the accusations lack foundation and views the proceedings as politically motivated attempts to silence him.
