During the second march against gentrification in Mexico City, vandalism occurred at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) despite security operations. The university filed complaints over the damages. Mexico City President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the violent acts, describing them as "fascist and intolerant," and criticized the burning of books, stating that only fascists have historically burned books. Sheinbaum also called the removal of statues of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in the Cuauhtémoc borough illegal, labeling the act as "intolerant." In response, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, mayor of Cuauhtémoc, expressed surprise at Sheinbaum's comments and recalled her own actions as former Mexico City mayor, when she ordered the removal of plaques and monuments of historical figures such as Díaz Ordaz and Christopher Columbus. Rojo de la Vega also addressed the controversy surrounding her past visit to Cuba, where images showed her in front of a Che Guevara mural, clarifying that the visit occurred 10 years ago. Clara Brugada, Mexico City’s head of government, strongly rejected the violent acts inside UNAM during the march and explained that the city police did not intervene due to respect for university autonomy.
