In early July 2025, Mexico City witnessed its first large-scale protest against gentrification, primarily in neighborhoods such as Hipódromo, Condesa, Roma, Juárez, Doctores, and Obrera. Hundreds of residents, civil organizations, and collectives gathered at Parque México to denounce rising rents, displacement of locals, and the impact of an influx of foreigners, particularly Americans and digital nomads. Protesters carried signs and chanted slogans including "¡Fuera gringos!" and "Go home, gringo!" to express opposition to what they described as a modern colonization driven by mass tourism and real estate speculation. While the demonstration began peacefully, it escalated into violence with masked individuals vandalizing businesses, restaurants, and buildings, as well as harassing tourists, predominantly from the U.S. The unrest highlighted longstanding grievances about government failures to regulate the housing market and control rent increases. In response, Clara Brugada, the Head of Government of Mexico City, announced a comprehensive plan titled "Bando 1: Por una ciudad habitable y asequible con identidad y arraigo local," consisting of 14 measures aimed at combating gentrification. The plan includes regulating rent increases to prevent them from exceeding inflation, creating a fair rent law, establishing a Defensoría de Derechos Inquilinarios (Tenant Rights Ombudsman), and imposing controls on short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. Additionally, the government plans to conduct a census to identify residents displaced by gentrification, with promises to prioritize their return. The announcement follows continued activism, including a second march in late July demanding the cancellation of a major real estate project, Fuentes Brotantes 134. Authorities intend to present legislative proposals after August to solidify these measures and address the housing affordability crisis exacerbated by the influx of foreign residents and mass tourism.
