Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on Sunday at the Fuentes Brotantes station in southern Mexico City for the capital’s second march opposing rising housing costs and real-estate developments viewed as accelerating gentrification. The procession, estimated by city officials at about 200 participants, advanced north along Avenida Insurgentes Sur toward the El Caminero area in Tlalpan, carrying banners that called for the cancellation of the planned Fuentes Brotantes 134 housing project and wider action on the city’s housing crisis. The local government deployed officers from the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana and mediation teams from the Secretaría de Gobierno to accompany the march. Police temporarily closed traffic on Insurgentes Sur between the El Caminero and Fuentes Brotantes stations and, at one point, formed containment lines around masked protesters. Authorities reported no injuries or major property damage as of late afternoon and said the operation followed the city’s protest protocol to preserve free expression while limiting disruptions. The demonstration follows a first anti-gentrification rally on 4 July that ended in scattered vandalism. In response, the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum last week announced 14 measures aimed at curbing illegal rent increases, preventing evictions and regulating new developments. Organizers said they will continue to mobilize until the city guarantees affordable housing for long-term residents.
