Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro clinched the overall title of the 47th Vuelta a Burgos, becoming the first rider from his country to win the Spanish stage race. The 21-year-old, who rides for UAE Team Emirates, overturned a 26-second deficit to Frenchman Léo Bisiaux on Saturday to secure the general-classification victory. The decisive move came on the 138.3-kilometre fifth stage between Quintana del Pidio and the gruelling uphill finish at Lagunas de Neila. Despite suffering a rear-wheel puncture 14 kilometres from the line, Del Toro rejoined the favourites and finished second, 10 seconds behind Italy’s Giulio Ciccone. The result was enough to leapfrog Bisiaux, who slipped out of the lead on the final ascent. Del Toro’s triumph capped a dramatic week in which he also recovered from a crash on the opening day that dropped him to 49th place overall. The victory adds to a breakthrough season that has already lifted him to seventh in the Union Cycliste Internationale rankings and underscores his emergence as one of the sport’s most versatile stage racers.
