Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna, the delegate of Mexico's Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was assassinated on August 4, 2025, in an armed attack linked to the seizure of nearly 2 million liters of stolen fuel (huachicol) in Reynosa. His funeral was held under strict surveillance with a strong presence of federal and state security forces. Authorities have arrested Jareth Roberto Hernández Rojas, also known as Jaret Roberto “H”, a presumed member of "Los Metros," a faction of the Gulf Cartel, who was found in a rehabilitation center in Reynosa. He was detained with long firearms, ammunition, and drugs and had a federal arrest warrant. The FGR identified him as one of the main individuals responsible for the fuel theft operations in the region. A federal judge has since linked Hernández Rojas to the homicide and ordered his preventive detention at the Altiplano prison. This arrest represents the first capture related to the case. Additionally, in a separate operation, federal authorities apprehended “El Chendo,” the leader of the Fuerzas Especiales Avendaño, the armed wing of the “Los Mayos” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, along with three other suspects following a pursuit on the Culiacán–Los Mochis highway.
