Mexico City capped its Pride Month festivities on 28 June with the 47th Marcha del Orgullo LGBT, drawing about 800,000 people according to the capital’s government—its largest turnout on record. Under the slogan “Diversidad sin fronteras: justicia, resistencia y unidad,” contingents began moving at noon from the Ángel de la Independencia and advanced along Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juárez and Eje Central before reaching the Zócalo for concerts and cultural events. City officials deployed more than 2,000 public servants for crowd management, medical care and transport coordination; the Escuadrón de Rescate y Urgencias Médicas treated 13 minor cases and reported no serious incidents. The Secretariat of Economic Development estimated the march and related celebrations generated a MXN 1.1 billion boost for some 14,000 businesses, from restaurants to night-spots across the historic centre. The parade followed a series of visibility actions, most notably the creation of what organisers say is the world’s largest human LGBTQ+ flag on 22 June. More than 6,000 participants equipped with coloured umbrellas and T-shirts filled the Zócalo’s main square, an event led by Head of Government Clara Brugada to mark Pride Month and promote inclusion. Pride activities had begun a week earlier with the Marcha Lencha, a gathering of lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer women, underscoring the broader call for justice and an end to hate crimes. While celebrations dominated the atmosphere, organisers and demonstrators reiterated demands for stronger protections against discrimination and gender-based violence, reflecting the dual spirit of fiesta and protest that characterised this year’s record-setting Pride season in the Mexican capital.
