Mexico has experienced a notable decline in both homicide rates and poverty levels during the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who took office in late 2024. According to Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), the average daily rate of intentional homicides fell by 25.3% from September 2024 to July 2025, decreasing from 86.9 to 64.9 cases per day. This reduction equates to 22 fewer homicides daily, with July 2025 marking the lowest monthly homicide rate since 2015. The state of Nuevo León saw a particularly sharp drop of 72.9% in homicides, from an average of 5 daily in September 2024 to 1.35 in July 2025. Similarly, Quintana Roo reported a 61.3% decrease in homicides during the same period, with no kidnappings reported, as noted by Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). While most high-impact crimes declined, extortion increased by 25.4%, attributed to enhanced reporting encouraged by the National Strategy. Concurrently, Mexico's poverty rate has declined substantially. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) shows that the population living in poverty decreased from 36.3% in 2022 to 29.6% in 2024, representing a reduction of over 8.3 million people in two years. From 2018 to 2024, approximately 13.4 million Mexicans exited poverty, with the total number falling from 52.2 million in 2016 to 38.5 million in 2024. President Sheinbaum described this reduction as a "historic" achievement and a "feat" of the Fourth Transformation (4T) government, crediting increased minimum wages, social welfare programs, and improved access to rights such as health, education, and housing. Despite these gains, challenges remain: 38.7% of children and adolescents still live in poverty, and two-thirds of employed individuals lack social security benefits. Additionally, while overall poverty has declined, the indicator related to health deprivation worsened, rising from 15.6% to 34.2% between 2016 and 2024. The government continues to emphasize the importance of addressing these persistent social deficits alongside the progress made.
