President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the government-run Tren Maya is operating at full capacity and is designed to be financially viable, even though it currently receives federal subsidies. Addressing criticism that operating costs are 25 times higher than passenger revenue, she said profitability will improve once the full train fleet and a forthcoming freight service are in place. During the same press conference, General Óscar David Lozano Águila, the project’s director, acknowledged he could not provide the total cost of the rail line, which began construction in 2020 under the previous administration. Sheinbaum replied that final figures will be disclosed once remaining construction contracts are closed, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency. Lozano announced ten all-inclusive summer vacation packages that combine round-trip flights from the Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Ángeles, lodging, meals and rail journeys across southeastern Mexico. Prices range from about 16,000 to 24,800 pesos for trips lasting four to six days. He said the offers are marketed as up to 50% cheaper than comparable private tours and will include discounted fares for low-income travelers.
