Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday that the United States will not deploy troops on Mexican soil, dismissing any prospect of an American "invasion" after media reports that President Donald Trump had secretly empowered the Pentagon to use military force against Latin American drug cartels. Speaking at her daily news conference, Sheinbaum confirmed her government had been briefed on Trump’s executive order and was told it applies strictly within U.S. territorial jurisdictions. “Estados Unidos no va a venir a México con militares; no va a haber invasión, eso está absolutamente descartado”, she said, adding that any U.S. law-enforcement presence in Mexico remains tightly regulated. The New York Times reported earlier in the day that Trump signed a classified directive providing a legal basis for potential operations at sea or on foreign soil against cartels Washington has designated as terrorist organisations. The Pentagon has not commented. Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico would continue to cooperate with the United States on security matters but would reject any proposal involving U.S. combat forces inside the country.
