Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the text of a new security agreement with the United States has been completed, but the two governments have yet to fix a date to sign it. “The deal is ready,” she told reporters on 5 August, adding that officials are determining when the document will be formalized. Sheinbaum rejected a Wall Street Journal report that suggested cartel violence could derail the accord, insisting the pact “is not at risk” and that cooperation with Washington remains uninterrupted. She confirmed investigations continue into the recent escape of Zhi Dong Zhang, a Chinese-born trafficker wanted by U.S. authorities, but maintained the incident has not altered bilateral talks. According to the president, the agreement is built on four principles—respect for sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, mutual trust, and collaboration—and is expected to bolster intelligence sharing, curb flows of fentanyl precursors into Mexico, and tackle cross-border arms trafficking. While Sheinbaum previously indicated the accord might be signed this week following phone discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, she now says the timeline is still under review by both capitals.
